First Person Point of View adds to the personal feeling of the story. The first chapter serves as a good introduction to the upcoming novel. Billy Pilgrim is recalling events from his "Children's Crusade", which was World War II. He wants to write a book, "I'll tell you what, I'll call it 'The Children's Crusade.'" (p 15). He begins explaining how he keeps reliving different events in his life in a completely unknown pattern.
